    Early Predictor for Glaucoma Identified

    Jan. 2, 2013 — A new study finds that certain changes in blood vessels in the eye’s retina can be an early warning that a person is at increased risk for glaucoma, an eye disease that slowly robs people of their peripheral vision. Using diagnostic photos and other data from the Australian Blue Mountains Eye Study, the researchers showed that patients who had abnormally narrow retinal arteries when the study began were also those who were most likely to have glaucoma at its 10-year end point. If confirmed by future research, this finding could give ophthalmologists a new way to identify and treat those who are most vulnerable to vision loss from glaucoma. —The study was recently published online by Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.—Open-angle glaucoma (OAG), the most common form of the disease, affects nearly three million people in the U.S and 60 million worldwide. Vision loss occurs when glaucoma damages the optic nerve, the part of the eye that transmits images from the retina to the brain. Unfortunately, because glaucoma does not have symptoms, many people don’t know they have the disease until a good portion of their sight has been lost. Early detection is critical to treating glaucoma in time to preserve vision.—The findings of the new study, led by Paul Mitchell, M.D., PhD, of the Centre for Vision Research, University of Sydney, supports the concept that abnormal narrowing of retinal blood vessels is an important factor in the earliest stages of OAG. Tracking nearly 2,500 participants, the study found that the OAG risk at the 10-year mark was about four times higher in patients whose retinal arteries had been narrowest when the study began, compared with those who had had the widest arteries.—None of the participants had a diagnosis of OAG at the study’s outset. Compared with the study group as a whole, the patients who were diagnosed with OAG by the 10-year mark were older, had had higher blood pressure or higher intraocular pressure at the study’s baseline, and were more likely to be female. Elevated intraocular pressure, or pressure within the eye, is often found in patients with OAG. Study results were adjusted for age, family history of glaucoma, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and other relevant factors.—“Our results suggest that a computer-based imaging tool designed to detect narrowing of the retinal artery caliber, or diameter, could effectively identify those who are most at risk for open-angle glaucoma,” said Dr. Mitchell. “Such a tool would also need to account for blood pressure and other factors that can contribute to blood vessel changes. Early detection would allow ophthalmologists to treat patients before optic nerve damage occurs and would give us the best chance of protecting their vision.”–A symptomless eye disease like glaucoma highlights the importance of regular eye exams.     New Evidence That Green Tea May Help Fight Glaucoma and Other Eye Diseases


    Scientists have confirmed that the healthful substances found in green tea — renowned for their powerful antioxidant and disease-fighting properties — do penetrate into tissues of the eye. —-Feb. 20, 2010 — Scientists have confirmed that the healthful substances found in green tea — renowned for their powerful antioxidant and disease-fighting properties — do penetrate into tissues of the eye. Their new report, the first documenting how the lens, retina, and other eye tissues absorb these substances, raises the possibility that green tea may protect against glaucoma and other common eye diseases.

    It appears in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.—Chi Pui Pang and colleagues point out that so-called green tea “catechins” have been among a number of antioxidants thought capable of protecting the eye. Those include vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Until now, however, nobody knew if the catechins in green tea actually passed from the stomach and gastrointestinal tract into the tissues of the eye.—Pang and his colleagues resolved that uncertainty in experiments with laboratory rats that drank green tea. Analysis of eye tissues showed beyond a doubt that eye structures absorbed significant amounts of individual catechins. The retina, for example, absorbed the highest levels of gallocatechin, while the aqueous humor tended to absorb epigallocatechin. The effects of green tea catechins in reducing harmful oxidative stress in the eye lasted for up to 20 hours. “Our results indicate that green tea consumption could benefit the eye against oxidative stress,” the report concludes.—Story Source–The above story is reprinted from materials provided by American Chemical Society. –Journal Reference-Chu et al. Green Tea Catechins and Their Oxidative Protection in the Rat Eye. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2010; 58 (3): 1523 DOI: 10.1021/jf9032602


    Green Tea Helps Beat Superbugs

    Apr. 1, 2008 — Green tea can help beat superbugs according to Egyptian scientists speaking March, 31, 2008 at the Society for General Microbiology’s 162nd meeting.–The pharmacy researchers have shown that drinking green tea helps the action of important antibiotics in their fight against resistant superbugs, making them up to three times more effective.—Green tea is a very common beverage in Egypt, and it is quite likely that patients will drink green tea while taking antibiotics. The medical researchers wanted to find out if green tea would interfere with the action of the antibiotics, have no effect, or increase the medicines’ effects.—“We tested green tea in combination with antibiotics against 28 disease causing micro-organisms belonging to two different classes,” says Dr Mervat Kassem from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Alexandria University in Egypt. “In every single case green tea enhanced the bacteria-killing activity of the antibiotics. For example the killing effect of chloramphenicol was 99.99% better when taken with green tea than when taken on its own in some circumstances.”—Green tea also made 20% of drug-resistant bacteria susceptible to one of the cephalosporin antibiotics. These are important antibiotics that new drug resistant strains of bacteria have evolved to resist.—-The results surprised the researchers, showing that in almost every case and for all types of antibiotics tested, drinking green tea at the same time as taking the medicines seemed to reduce the bacteria’s drug resistance, even in superbug strains, and increase the action of the antibiotics.     So you can use a straight water—water and alcohol—or even  vinegar and water this will pull out the properties of the green tea

    Origin expects to grow China’s first GMO corn in 2013

    BEIJING (Reuters) – Origin Agritech Ltd said it expects the Chinese government to approve its genetically modified organism (GMO) corn for production in 2013, China’s first GMO strain in commercial production, its chairman Han Gengchen said on Friday.–China gave the phytase corn biosafety approval in November 2009 and at the time scientists had expected large-scale production could happen as early as 2012, but a complicated approval process for use as seed has delayed the expectation.—“We have bred the gene on local hybrid seeds which are popularly used and generate high yields. The safety approval process (for seed use) would be faster and likely be this year and we will start production next year,” Han told Reuters.–Once approved, the U.S-listed firm expects the acreage for its phytase corn to account for 10 percent of the country’s total corn acreage within 10 years, said Han.—The Beijing-based company is working on the biosafety approval for the other two strains of GMO corn, the glyphosate tolerance and insect-resistant, and did not give any schedule as when these two can be approved by the government.—-Phytase corn can help pigs digest more phosphorous, enhancing growth and reducing pollution from animal waste. China is the world’s largest pig breeder and also the top consumer of pork[U1] .

    GMO CORN FIRST—-China, the world’s second-largest corn consumer, planted about 33 million hectares of corn last year, but rising consumption from animal feed production in response to more meat demand as well as industrial use has exceeded the growth of its production.—China’s rising needs could lead Beijing to give priority to corn for commercial production first before Bt rice, which Beijing also offered biosafety approval for in 2009, said Clive James, founder and chair of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA).—“What I hear is that they (the government) gives priority to corn… The government is very cognizant to the fact that corn imports increase yearly…if you want to antidote that, it must be commercialization,” he told Reuters[U2] .—China has turned into a net corn importer since 2010. The rise of imports of genetically-modified corn last year, all from the United States[U3] , for state reserves has sparked concerns that the country’s imports could surge in future as it did for soybeans.—The expected commercial approval of biotech Golden Rice in the Philippines in 2013/14 will be of significance to China in commercial production of its own GMO rice, he said.—“China’s agriculture trade deficit increased by 41 percent (last year)… which shows the need is increasing very fast, the speed of action in making decisions is crucial,” said James.—China ranks 6th worldwide in the area of biotech crops in 2011, with a record 3.9 million hectares of Bt cotton during the year at the highest adoption rate of 71.5 percent, according to ISAAA.—China is the world’s largest importer of GMO soybean, with annual imports accounting for about 60 percent of global traded soybean.

    Irish Court Rules Against Mothers Right To Refuse Vaccination

    A young mother, Clare O Sullivan from Waterford, Eire, who has refused consent for her young five year old son to be vaccinated was before the high court on the 18th of June 2012 in Dublin.

    She was there to seek an injunction on an order from her local district court taken by the father of her child.—Ms O Sullivan, who was main organiser of the Awaken Ireland event in Waterford earlier this month, travelled in the early hours of the morning to Dublin from Waterford in an effort to seek an injunction on the order made by the district court. By the afternoon, in a private sitting, Clare invoked Article 41.1.1 of the Irish Constitution in the original direct literal translation:—The State acknowledges that the family is the basic primary group-unit of/for society according to nature, and that it is a moral institution which has inalienable invincible rights which are more ancient and higher than any human statute.—-However, the judge refused to accept the invocation of the article 41.1.1 of constitution and refused an injunction on the previous order.—This is clearly not only a violation of Ms O’Sullivan rights as a mother, but also a violation of the Irish Constitution itself.

    Ms O Sullivan stated-these vaccinations are NOT  mandatory in the Republic of Ireland. All parents are given a consent form to sign in a consent or ‘I do not consent section’. I chose not to consent, I feel that I am acting in the best interests of my child and my decision is to protect him. I have every right to make this decision as the primary carer, natural mother, sole custodian and legal guardian of my son.—Alarmingly this is the second time in a week that the members of the BAR (British Accredited Registry) have refused to recognise the Constitution of Ireland. Last Friday Ben Gilroy invoked Article 40 Habeas Corpus in the High Courts in Dublin, which was passed between seven high court judges and completely ignored


    Antioxidant 2-

    Ascorbic acid
    AA has 4 −OH groups that can donate hydrogen to an oxidizing system (Figure 6). Because the −OH groups (2 pairs of 2) are on adjacent carbon atoms, AA is able to chelate metal ions (Fe++). It also scavenges free radicals, quenches •O2−, and acts as a reducing agent. At high levels (>1000 mg/kg), AA shifts the balance between ferrous (Fe2+) and ferric iron (Fe3+), acts as an oxygen scavenger, and inhibits oxidation. However, at low levels (<100 mg/kg), it can catalyze oxidation (in muscle tissue; Ahn and others 2007; Yetella and Min 2008).—Environmental conditions and the presence of other compounds in the system can alter the antioxidative capacity of AA. Allam and Mohamed (2002) reported that, using the induction period for the oxidation of sunflower oil as a measure of antioxidant activity after heating (180 °C), ascorbyl palmitate was less thermally stable than mixed tocopherols, propyl gallate, BHT, or BHA. This may be a function of the water solubility of AA.

    A number of spices and herbs contain compounds that can be removed and added to food systems to prevent oxidation (Lee and Shibamoto 2002; Ahn and others 2007; Rojas and Brewer 2007, 2008a; Sasse and others 2009). Antioxidant (and flavor) components of herbs and spices may be removed/concentrated as extracts, essential oils, or resins. Extracts are soluble fractions that can be removed from plant materials by solubilizing the component(s) of interest in an aqueous, lipid, alcohol, solvent, or supercritical CO2 phase then removing it. Essential oils are the volatile oils and often contain isoprenoid compounds. Chemically, essential oils are extremely complex mixtures containing compounds of every major functional group class. Essential oils are isolated by steam distillation, extraction (solvent or CO2), or mechanical expression from the plant material. Plants also contain resins that are nonvolatile, high molecular weight, amorphous solids, or semisolids that flow when subjected to heat or stress. They are typically light yellow to dark brown in color, tasteless, odorless or faintly aromatic, and translucent or transparent. Most resins are bicyclic terpenes (alpha- and beta-pinene, delta-3 carene, and sabinene), monocyclic terpenes (limonene and terpinolene), and tricyclic sesquiterpenes (longifolene, caryophyllene, and delta-cadinene). They are soluble in most organic solvents but not in water. Resins may contain small amounts of volatile phenolic compounds.—-=Extracts of many members of the Labiatae (Lamiaceae) family (oregano, marjoram, savory, sage, rosemary, thyme, and basil), which are antioxidative, have a high total phenol content (Chen and others 2007). They do not necessarily have a high free radical-scavenging ability but appear to contain components that function by at least 2 different antioxidative mechanisms (Madsen and others 1996). Dorman and others (2003) observed that, while these antioxidant characteristics are not entirely related to the total phenolic contents, they do appear to be strongly dependent on rosmarinic acid, the major phenolic component present. Rosmarinic acid has vicinal −OH groups on each of 2 aromatic rings, while carnosic acid, carnosol, and rosmanol each have vicinal −OH groups on only 1 aromatic ring (Figure 3). A number of herbs (chamomile, rosehip, hawthorn, and lemon verbena) can enhance the activity of antioxidative enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase in a dose-dependent manner and have been shown to enhance cell viability and provide protective effects against oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (in lung fibroblasts; Yoo and others 2008).


    Chen and others (2007) reported that, of several herbs (Psidium guajava L., Camellia sinensis[Gamma Amino Butyric Acid tea], T. sinensis Roem., and Rosemarinus officinalis L.), the aqueous extract of rosemary contained the highest concentration of phenolic substances (185 mg/g; Folin–Ciocalteau) and total flavonoids (141 mg/g). This aqueous extract inhibited UVB-induced (100 to 400 nm) oxidation of an erythrocyte ghost system (in vivo model system) at a relatively low concentration (100 μg/mL; Chen and others 2007). At 100 mcg/mL, rosemary extract was able to scavenge 39% of the DPPH radicals (0.2 μm); at 500 mcg/mL, it scavenged 55%. Rosemary extract (100 mcg/mL) inhibited liposome (egg lecithin with Fe3+/AA/H2O2) oxidation by 98%.

    The most active antioxidative constituents of rosemary (R. officinalis) are phenolic diterpenes (carnosic, carnosol, rosmanol, rosmadial, 12-methoxycarnosic acid, epi-, and iso-rosmanol) and phenolic acids (rosmarinic and caffeic) (Table 4; Figure 1 and 2; Frankel 1991; Frankel and others 1996; Richheimer and others 1996; Nakatani 2003; Thorsen and Hildebrandt 2003; Carvalho and others 2005). Carnosic acid has several times the antioxidative activity as BHT and BHA (Richheimer and others 1996). The synthetic phenolic antioxidants, BHA and BHT, each have a single aromatic ring with 1 −OH group capable of donating H•. While carnosic acid also has a single aromatic ring, it has 2 −OH groups that can serve as H• donors. In addition, vicinal −OH groups can chelate prooxidative metals thereby preventing oxidation via 2 mechanisms. Hra and others (2000) reported that, in sunflower oil, rosemary extract exhibited antioxidant activity superior to α-tocopherol. The polyphenol, rosmarinic acid has 2 aromatic rings, each with 2 −OH groups that are capable of donating H• and chelating metals. Adding α-tocopherol to rosemary can have either an antagonistic effect (Hra and others 2000) or a synergistic effect (Aoki and Wada 2003). This may indicate that there are components in rosemary, other than rosmarinic acid, which make substantial contributions to the antioxidative capacity of the extract. It may also be a function of the solubility of the rosemary fractions used compared to that of α-tocopherol with respect to the food system to which it being added.

    Red Wine Could Mask Testosterone Levels  –Testosterone Sustainer

    Jan. 7, 2013 — Red wine could give athletes and players a boost in the sports arena by increasing the amount of performance-enhancing hormone testosterone in their bodies, according to researchers from London’s Kingston University.-However not only could the beverage help them to trophy success, it could also allow them to beat anti-doping tests. A team led by Professor Declan Naughton, from the University’s School of Life Sciences, found that red wine might reduce the amount of testosterone excreted by the body, which could distort the findings of drug tests taken from urine samples.-Testosterone is a naturally-occurring steroid hormone present in both men and women. It can increase muscle mass, boost stamina and speed up recovery. Sportspeople, however, are prohibited from taking it, or a synthetic version of it, to try to gain a competitive edge. Although red wine is not a banned substance away from the sports field, Professor Naughton’s team has referred its findings to the World Anti-Doping Agency because of the newly-discovered side effect of potential change to the amount of testosterone in the body.–“Previous research has shown the effect over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs can have on enzymes,” Professor Naughton explained. “Since many of these drugs are derived from plants, we decided to look at the effect particular foods and beverages can have on enzymes involved in testosterone excretion. We chose green tea and then red wine because both have a huge variety of natural molecules and we wanted to see if they affected the amount of testosterone excreted in urine.”—The team found that a compound in red wine, known as quercetin, partially blocked the action of an enzyme called UGT2B17, which looks for testosterone and then sends a message to the kidneys to excrete it. Professor Naughton stressed that the research had so far been conducted in test tube experiments and had yet to be trialed on humans. “A full clinical study would be needed to determine the effects on people but, if the same results were found, it would confirm that compounds in red wine can reduce the amount of testosterone in urine and give a boost to testosterone levels,” he explained.-The effect of red wine on an individual would vary because of factors such as weight, fitness, health and diet, making it hard to estimate how much was needed to improve performance, Professor Naughton said.-Teetotallers are not exempt from the effects. In fact, the alcohol content of red wine has very little impact because non-alcoholic molecules are responsible for inhibiting testosterone excretion.–The team also found the results were the same for red wine extract in supplement form. The active compounds such as quercetin are found in many foodstuffs as well as supplements.–The findings have been published in leading international journal Nutrition.     Tea Could Aid Olympic Cheating-Testosterone Sustainer
    Researchers from Kingston University in London have found that green and white teas could hide abnormal levels of testosterone in athletes.

    May 21, 2012 — Researchers from Kingston University in London have found that green and white teas could hide abnormal levels of testosterone in athletes. Research carried out at London’s Kingston University has revealed that athletes could mask illegal doping with testosterone by drinking green and white tea. A team headed by Professor Declan Naughton, from the University’s School of Life Sciences, found drinking the beverages had the potential to reduce the amount of the performance-enhancing hormone present in urine testing. Professor Naughton said the findings could have significant implications for major sporting events such as the 2012 Olympics. “We’ve spent the past four years researching this and, as far as we’re aware, it’s the first study that has found food and diet can alter the metabolism of testosterone,” Professor Naughton said. “We looked at how a particular enzyme reacts to various foodstuffs to see if it affects the amount of time certain substances such as cancer drugs stay in the body.” The enzyme in question excretes testosterone through urine and the potential to mask doping occurs when compounds called catechins – present in green and white tea but not in black – inhibit this. This means athletes attempting to enhance their performance illegally with testosterone could potentially mask a boost in the hormone by drinking a certain amount of the tea.-“The catechins stop enzymes tagging molecules for excretion so the kidneys don’t recognise them as needing to be removed and leave them circulating in the body,” Professor Naughton explained. “We found that green and white tea could inhibit the enzyme by about 30 per cent. The levels of catechins in a strong cup of green tea matched those we used in our experiments.”—While the team’s findings were lab-based, if the same effect occurs in human bodies the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) may rethink its approach to drug testing. “WADA is aiming to add regular checks of blood steroids to its biological passports which monitor athletes for suspicious changes in their physiology,” Olivier Rabin, WADA’s science director, said. “That should foil any attempt to fool the urine test.”–However Professor Naughton feels blood testing is probably not enough. “Our Kingston University research shows testing hair is a key way to pinpoint doping. Substances stay in the hair for longer and, more importantly, are not dependant on the enzyme affected by the teas,” he said.–For athletes who don’t resort to doping, the increased levels of testosterone from drinking green and white teas may provide a legal boost. “It’s like having extra testosterone without actually taking any,” Professor Naughton said. “By not excreting it from the body, athletes could potentially increase their testosterone levels for improved performance.     Hydrogen Peroxide Vapor Enhances Hospital Disinfection of Superbugs

    Dec. 31, 2012 — Infection control experts at The Johns Hopkins Hospital have found that a combination of robot-like devices that disperse a bleaching agent into the air and then detoxify the disinfecting chemical are highly effective at killing and preventing the spread of multiple-drug-resistant bacteria, or so-called hospital superbugs.–A study report on the use of hydrogen peroxide vaporizers — first deployed in several Singapore hospitals during the 2002 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, and later stocked by several U.S. government agencies in case of an anthrax attack — is to be published Jan. 1 in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.–In the study, the Johns Hopkins team placed the devices in single hospital rooms after routine cleaning to disperse a thin film of the bleaching hydrogen peroxide across all exposed hospital equipment surfaces, as well as on room floors and walls. Results showed that the enhanced cleaning reduced by 64 percent the number of patients who later became contaminated with any of the most common drug-resistant organisms. Moreover, researchers found that protection from infection was conferred on patients regardless of whether the previous room occupant was infected with drug-resistant bacteria or not.-“Hydrogen peroxide vapor, as spread around patients’ rooms by these devices, represents a major technological advance in preventing the spread of dangerous bacteria inside hospitals and, especially, from one patient occupant to the next, even though sick patients were never in the same room at the same time,” says infectious disease specialist and study senior investigator Trish Perl, M.D., M.Sc.–Of special note, researchers say, was that enhanced cleaning with the vapor reduced by 80 percent a patient’s chances of becoming colonized by a particularly aggressive and hard-to-treat bacterium, vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE).-In what is believed to be the first head-to-head comparison between traditional hand-cleaning and mopping with bleaching agents and robotic vaporizers, researchers routinely tested patients and their surroundings not only for VRE, but also for the more common methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, and lesser-known bacteria, including Clostridium difficile and Acinetobacter baumannii.–Some 6,350 patient admissions to JHH were closely tracked as part of the two-and-a-half-year analysis, as patients moved into and out of 180 private hospital rooms. Almost half the rooms received enhanced cleaning with hydrogen peroxide vapor in between patients, while the rest did not. Overall, multiple-drug-resistant organisms were found on room surfaces in 21 percent of rooms tested, but mostly in rooms that did not undergo enhanced cleaning.–Perl says that patients bringing in or picking up drug-resistant organisms while undergoing treatment in hospitals is a persistent and growing problem, and previous research has shown that patients who stay in a hospital room previously occupied by an infected patient are at greater risk of becoming infected.–“Our study results are evidence that technological solutions, when combined with standard cleaning, can effectively and systematically decontaminate patients’ rooms and augment other behavioral practices, such as strict hospital staff compliance with hand-washing and bathing patients in disinfecting chlorhexidine when they are first admitted to the hospital,” says Perl, senior hospital epidemiologist for the Johns Hopkins Health System and a professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.–“Our goal is to improve all hospital infection control practices, including cleaning and disinfection, as well as behavioral and environmental practices, to the point where preventing the spread of these multiple-drug-resistant organisms also minimizes the chances of patients becoming infected and improves their chances of recovery,” says Perl.–The paired robot-like devices, each about the size of a washing machine and weighing nearly 60 pounds, as well as supplies used in the study, were provided by their manufacturer, Bioquell Inc. of Horsham, Pa.–After the room has been cleaned, the vents are covered and the two devices are placed inside. The sliding door is closed, and the room is sealed. Then, the larger of the two devices disperses hydrogen peroxide into the room, leaving a very tiny, almost invisible layer (only 2 microns to 6 microns in thickness) on all exposed surfaces, including keyboards and monitors, as well as tables and chairs.–Because hydrogen peroxide can be toxic to humans if ingested or corrosive if left on the skin for too long, the second, smaller device is activated to break down the bleach into its component water and oxygen parts. The combined operation takes the devices about an hour and a half to complete.–“What is so exciting about this new method of infection control is that the devices are easy to use and hospital staff embrace it very quickly,” says surgeon and study co-investigator Pamela Lipsett, M.D., M.H.P.E. Lipsett, a professor and director of surgical and critical care fellowship training at Johns Hopkins, says that during the study and before room cleanings, staff were “wheeling in” other pieces of equipment so these, too, could be decontaminated by the hydrogen peroxide vapor.–As a result of the study and the researchers’ recommendation, JHH has purchased two of the Bioquell decontaminating units, which cost more than $40,000 per pair. The devices, already in use at some 20 other hospitals across the country, will be used at Johns Hopkins to decontaminate rooms typically housing high-risk patients under strict isolation precautions because of severe infection with a multiple-drug-resistant organism.–Researchers say they next plan to study the devices’ effectiveness at decontaminating the outside packaging of unused but potentially exposed hospital supplies, which are typically discarded even though their seals remain intact. The research team also wants to coordinate study testing among other hospitals to validate their Johns Hopkins findings. Larger and longer studies may also be planned, to precisely measure and determine how well the devices work against the spread of each hospital superbug.     Two in three shoppers demand GM product labels in embarrassing consumer backlash for government against ‘Frankenstein foods’

    Environment Secretary Owen Paterson claimed the benefits of GM crops went beyond the food chain  Two in three shoppers are demanding that meat, milk and eggs from farm animals fed a GM diet should be labelled, according to an official study.-The results make clear that families feel that clear labelling is the only way they can choose whether they want to support controversial ‘Frankenstein Food’ farming or not.-The research findings, published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), are a major embarrassment for the government.-The new food and farming secretary, Owen Paterson, is in the middle of a major public relations exercise designed to convince families to support GM farming and food.-He recently dismissed consumer concerns as ‘humbug’ and ‘complete nonsense’ while boasting that much of the nation’s meat comes from animals fed on genetically modified grain imported from overseas[U1] . The minister suggested the public were perfectly happy to accept this and that the UK should now open the door to a wider take up of GM farming and food.[U2] –However, the new official research carried out by the Government’s own agency makes clear that most consumers had no idea that British farm animals are being reared on a GM diet.–After they were told, the vast majority – 67per cent – said packs of meat, milk and eggs should be labelled to spell this out on the label. The result puts pressure on Mr Paterson to either accept or reject the view of the vast majority of consumers. The Government has been the chief cheerleader in Europe for the adoption of GM farming and food. Ministers have recently agreed new cash support for GM research alongside Mr Paterson’s PR initiative to win over sceptical shoppers. Separately, Mr Paterson’s department is pressing the European Commission to slim down its GM regulatory regime to make it easier and quicker for biotech companies to get permission to begin commercial growing[U3] .—Just too perfect? Two GM corncobs (right) are compared to non-GM corn (left) grown in Germany  GM advocates insist that opponents are in some way anti-science and ignorant. It is argued that if they are educated about GM techniques that any objections will fall away.  In fact, past studies funded by the Government have revealed that the more consumers learn about the technology the more skeptical they become. At the same time, large farm scale trials conducted in the UK demonstrated that the industrial farming techniques associated with GM production were harmful in terms of wild plants, insects and farmland birds. The latest FSA research project looked specifically at attitudes to labelling and found putting GM information on pack is seen as important ‘in order to give consumers the right to choose’. The research team found that most people had absolutely no idea that pigs, young beef cattle and chickens on British farms are  given a GM diet.—Official research says most consumers had no idea that British farm animals are being reared on a GM diet (file picture)  They concluded: ‘Once made aware of its use in UK food products, participants typically considered that foods containing animal products derived from GM feed should be labelled.’

    They added: ‘Two-thirds of respondents considered it very or quite important that it is written on a label if the food itself or ingredients in the food are from a genetically modified plant or the food product is from animals that have been fed genetically modified plants.’ Currently, the only major national food chain to keep GM out of the diet of the animals on its farms is Marks & Spencer. They are also banned by organic farmers.     Link Between Pesticides And Parkinson’s Strengthened With Family Study

    Mar. 29, 2008 — For the first time, the association between Parkinson’s disease and exposure to pesticides has been shown in patients with the neurological disorder compared with their unaffected relatives, according to a new study. Parkinson’s disease is a common neurological disorder affecting about 1 million people in the USA. The disorder typically develops in later life resulting in symptoms such as tremors and muscle rigidity.–Although variations in several genes have been identified that contribute to the disease, these rare genetic defects account for a small proportion of the overall prevalence of the disorder.–The majority of Parkinson’s disease cases are thought to be due to an interaction between genetic and environmental factors.—“Previous studies have shown that individuals with Parkinson’s disease are over twice as likely to report being exposed to pesticides as unaffected individuals” says the study’s lead author, Dana Hancock, “but few studies have looked at this association in people from the same family or have assessed associations between specific classes of pesticides and Parkinson’s disease.”—The study of related individuals who share environmental and genetic backgrounds that might contribute to Parkinson’s disease enables researchers to identify specific differences in exposures between individuals with and without the disease. The research team from Duke University Medical Center (Durham, NC) and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Morris K. Udall Parkinson Disease Research Center of Excellence (Miami, FL, USA) recruited 319 patients and over 200 relatives. They used telephone interviews to obtain histories of pesticide exposure, living or working on a farm, and well-water drinking.–The authors detected an association between pesticide use and Parkinson’s disease. Among these, the strongest were between the disorder and use of herbicides and insecticides, such as organochlorides and organophosphates. No association was found between Parkinson’s disease and well-water drinking or living or working on a farm, which are two commonly used proxies for pesticide exposures.–Many studies have supported pesticides as a risk factor for PD, but “biological evidence is presently insufficient to conclude that pesticide exposure causes PD”, says Hancock. “Further investigation of these specific pesticides and others may lead to identification of pertinent biological pathways influencing PD development.” In addition future genetic studies of Parkinson’s disease should consider the influence of pesticides, since exposure to pesticides may provide a trigger for the disease in genetically predisposed individuals.-Journal reference: Dana B Hancock, Eden R Martin, Gregory M Mayhew, Jeffrey M Stajich, Rita Jewett, Mark A Stacy, Burton L Scott, Jeffery M Vance and William K Scott.     Pesticides and Parkinson’s: Further Proof of a Link Uncovered

    Jan. 3, 2013 — For several years, neurologists at UCLA have been building a case that a link exists between pesticides and Parkinson’s disease. To date, paraquat, maneb and ziram — common chemicals sprayed in California’s Central Valley and elsewhere — have been tied to increases in the disease, not only among farmworkers but in individuals who simply lived or worked near fields and likely inhaled drifting particles.—Now, UCLA researchers have discovered a link between Parkinson’s and another pesticide, benomyl, whose toxicological effects still linger some 10 years after the chemical was banned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.—Even more significantly, the research suggests that the damaging series of events set in motion by benomyl may also occur in people with Parkinson’s disease who were never exposed to the pesticide, according to Jeff Bronstein, senior author of the study and a professor of neurology at UCLA, and his colleagues.—Benomyl exposure, they say, starts a cascade of cellular events that may lead to Parkinson’s. The pesticide prevents an enzyme called ALDH (aldehyde dehydrogenase) from keeping a lid on DOPAL, a toxin that naturally occurs in the brain. When left unchecked by ALDH, DOPAL accumulates, damages neurons and increases an individual’s risk of developing Parkinson’s.—The investigators believe their findings concerning benomyl may be generalized to all Parkinson’s patients. Developing new drugs to protect ALDH activity, they say, may eventually help slow the progression of the disease, whether or not an individual has been exposed to pesticides.–The research is published in the current online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.—–Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions worldwide. Its symptoms — including tremor, rigidity, and slowed movements and speech — increase with the progressive degeneration of neurons, primarily in a part of the mid-brain called the substantia nigra. This area normally produces dopamine, a neurotransmitter that allows cells to communicate, and damage to the mid-brain has been linked to the disease. Usually, by the time Parkinson’s symptoms manifest themselves, more than half of these neurons, known as dopaminergic neurons, have already been lost.—-While researchers have identified certain genetic variations that cause an inherited form of Parkinson’s, only a small fraction of the disease can be blamed on genes, said the study’s first author, Arthur G. Fitzmaurice, a postdoctoral scholar in Bronstein’s laboratory.—“As a result, environmental factors almost certainly play an important role in this disorder,” Fitzmaurice said. “Understanding the relevant mechanisms — particularly what causes the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons — may provide important clues to explain how the disease develops.”–Benomyl was widely used in the U.S. for three decades until toxicological evidence revealed it could potentially lead to liver tumors, brain malformations, reproductive effects and carcinogenesis. It was banned in 2001.—The researchers wanted to explore whether there was a relationship between benomyl and Parkinson’s, which would demonstrate the possibility of long-lasting toxicological effects from pesticide use, even a decade after chronic exposure. But because a direct causal relationship between the pesticide and Parkinson’s can’t be established by testing humans, the investigators sought to determine if exposure in experimental models could duplicate some of the pathologic features of the disease.

    They first tested the effects of benomyl in cell cultures and confirmed that the pesticide damaged or destroyed dopaminergic neurons.—Next, they tested the pesticide in a zebrafish model of the disease. This freshwater fish is commonly used in research because it is easy to manipulate genetically, it develops rapidly and it is transparent, making the observation and measurement of biological processes much easier. By using a fluorescent dye and counting the neurons, the researchers discovered there was significant neuron loss in the fish — but only to the dopaminergic neurons. The other neurons were left unaffected.—-Until now, evidence had pointed to one particular culprit — a protein called α-synuclein — in the development of Parkinson’s. This protein, common to all Parkinson’s patients, is thought to create a pathway to the disease when it binds together in “clumps” and becomes toxic, killing the brain’s neurons.—The identification of ALDH activity now gives researchers another target to focus on in trying to stop this disease.—“We’ve known that in animal models and cell cultures, agricultural pesticides trigger a neurodegenerative process that leads to Parkinson’s,” said Bronstein, who directs the UCLA Movement Disorders Program. “And epidemiologic studies have consistently shown the disease occurs at high rates among farmers and in rural populations. Our work reinforces the hypothesis that pesticides may be partially responsible, and the discovery of this new pathway may be a new avenue for developing therapeutic drugs.”–Other authors of the study included Lisa Barnhill, Hoa A.     MSG and Pituitary Tumors

    MSG has been shown to overstimulate and damage neurons (nerve cells) in the hypothalamus region of the brain.  This part of the brain directs the action of the pituitary gland, which is called the “master” gland because it in turn directs the action of the other glands in the body – controlling metabolism, sexual development, and many other life processes.  25% of adults will develop a pituitary adenoma in their lifetime.  It is not officially known [U6] what causes them.  It does not appear to be genetically linked at this time.

    Prolactin—Almost half of all pituitary adenomas are prolactin secreting.  These prolactinomas can get so large that they affect vision by crowding the optic nerve.  In women, they are detected early because they interfere with menses.  Prolactin is the hormone associated with lactation in women who are nursing.   It stops ovulation.  Women with these tumors often cannot become pregnant because the body already thinks it is. In persons with a prolactin secereting tumor, lactation can take place even if:

    1 The victim was never pregnant

    2. The victim is MALE.

    Men who develop these tumors can develop breasts which secrete milk.  For men this disease is often devastating and can become life threatening, since in men, there is often no warning until the tumor has become large enough to possibly affect vision, cause excruciating headaches, and threaten other vital functions of the pituitary.–Pituitary tumors are often “benign” – not cancerous.  Because of this, they are not tracked in registries that keep track of tumors.  The government is only concerned if a tumor is cancerous.  Aspartame, which was found to produce pituitary tumors in laboratory animals was approved for use.   There[U7]  is no one actually tracking pituitary tumors in individuals who heavily use aspartame or MSG.—The cost of treating this illness is staggering.  The medication of choice – there are only two – is cabergoline which is a dopamine agonist sold under the name Dostinex.  It costs $30 per TABLET.  Even if patients undergo surgery, they usually must be on this medication for life.  This medication is the exact same one approved for use in Parkinson’s patients who have decreased levels of dopamine in the brain.


    MSG has been shown to increase prolactin secretion.

    MSG has also been proven to cause sterility in females.
    Aspartame has been proven to cause pituitary tumors
    Aspartate can be converted to glutamate in the body.
    Glutamate acts on the same receptors in the brain as aspartate.

    Beta-Amyloid peptides destabilize calcium homeostasis and render human cortical neurons vulnerable to excitotoxicity

    In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), abnormal accumulations of beta-amyloid are present in the brain and degenerating neurons exhibit cytoskeletal aberrations (neurofibrillary tangles). Roles for beta-amyloid in the neuronal degeneration of AD have been suggested based on recent data obtained in rodent studies demonstrating neurotoxic actions of beta- amyloid. However, the cellular mechanism of action of beta-amyloid is unknown, and there is no direct information concerning the biological activity of beta-amyloid in human neurons. We now report on experiments in human cerebral cortical cell cultures that tested the hypothesis that beta-amyloid can destabilize neuronal calcium regulation and render neurons more vulnerable to environmental stimuli that elevate intracellular calcium levels. Synthetic beta-amyloid peptides (beta APs) corresponding to amino acids 1–38 or 25–35 of the beta-amyloid protein enhanced glutamate neurotoxicity in cortical cultures, while a peptide with a scrambled sequence was without effect. beta APs alone had no effect on neuronal survival during a 4 d exposure period. beta APs enhanced both kainate and NMDA neurotoxicity, indicating that the effect was not specific for a particular subtype of glutamate receptor. The effects of beta APs on excitatory amino acid (EAA)-induced neuronal degeneration were concentration dependent and required prolonged (days) exposures. The beta APs also rendered neurons more vulnerable to calcium ionophore neurotoxicity, indicating that beta APs compromised the ability of the neurons to reduce intracellular calcium levels to normal limits. Direct measurements of intracellular calcium levels demonstrated that beta APs elevated rest levels of calcium and enhanced calcium responses to EAAs and calcium ionophore. The neurotoxicity caused by EAAs and potentiated by beta APs was dependent upon calcium influx since it did not occur in calcium-deficient culture medium. Finally, the beta APs made neurons more vulnerable to neurofibrillary tangle-like antigenic changes induced by EAAs or calcium ionophore (i.e., increased staining with tau and ubiquitin antibodies). Taken together, these data suggest that beta-amyloid destabilizes neuronal calcium homeostasis and thereby renders neurons more vulnerable to environmental insults.


    MSG and Atrial Fibrillation

    Taurine is the body’s heartbeat regulator.  Deficiency states can be induced by MSG because  glutamate competes in the body with another sulfur-containing amino acid – cysteine.  The body uses cysteine to make taurine – another sulfur-containing amino acid used as a neurotransmitter.   A major complaint of  MSG symptom complex sufferers is irregular, fast heartbeats, –   atrial fibrillation.  The same symptom also occurs from taurine deficiency.

    It is also interesting to note that MSG is a well known to induce epileptic seizures, and taurine is found to be low in individuals with seizures.  See our page on MSG and epilepsy.—Due to the genetic cause of autism being linked to glutamate receptor and transport genes, it now makes sense why some autistic children have atrial fib episodes as well as epilepsy.  In some autistic children, there is an inborn error of metabolism when dealing with sulphur-containing compounds.  Taurine is one of the sulphur-containing  amino acids used as a neurotransmitter.  –It is possible that a child who has a defiency of taurine from this common inborn error of metabolism, would be at risk of both an epileptic seizure, and atrial fibrillation as well as digestive problems due to problems forming bile.  It would be interesting to find out if children with both autism and A-fib (Timothy Syndrome) also suffer epileptic episodes and digestive distress due to taurine deficiency from this same error of metabolism.—It would be interesting to find out if these autistic children or adults with A-Fib but not autism, would be helped by simple supplementation with taurine since the body may have trouble making it.

    Some pharmaceutical companies are now pinning their hopes on glutamate antagonists to treat many NMDA related diseases including depression and schizophrenia because NMDA receptors are triggered by glutamate and the aspartic acid found in aspartame.-As of this writing (August 7, 2006), a study of 18 patients with depression was conducted using ketamine – a glutamate blocker that targets the NMDA receptors.  This treatment helped over 70% of those patients within one day of treatment  – giving hope to many patients and physicians that depression sufferers need no longer wait several weeks for conventional anti-depressants that work on dopamine and seratonin.

    This conclusion gives credence to the idea that MSG, by increasing blood levels of free glutamic acid, which lowers dopamine levels, and increases prolactin, affects depression on several levels.  It also begs the question, do people who steal ketamine (Special K) – an anesthesia drug used on humans and animals, do so to self-medicate for pain and mental illness?

    MSG, the U.S. Military, and Depression—Unfortunately a major unintended study of the effects of MSG and depression was carried out by the U.S. military.  MSG, until recently, MSG was actually required in the rations of U.S. troops.  These individuals were being fed MSG in every meal.  They are suffering right now from a high rate of suicide that is alarming those in charge.  Recent news articles are addressing this rise in depression and suicide among U.S. troops and what the military is doing to prevent further tragedy.  Perhaps the military brass should look no further than the M.R.E s that they were feeding the troops.

    OBJECTIVE–To assess whether monosodium glutamate (MSG) intake is associated with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB).
    METHODS–Data from 1227 Chinese subjects who participated in the Jiangsu Nutrition Study were analyzed. All the participants were examined at two time points (baseline in 2002 and follow-up in 2007). The MSG intake was assessed quantitatively in 2002 and a sleep questionnaire was used to assess snoring and to construct an SDB probability score in 2007. Those within the fifth quintile of the score (highest) were defined as having a high probability of SDB.
    The MSG intake was positively associated with snoring and a high probability of SDB in participants who had a normal body weight but in those who were overweight. A comparison of the extreme quartiles of MSG intake in subjects with a body mass index lower than 23 kg/m(2) showed an odds ratio of 2.02 (95% confidence interval 1.02-4.00) for snoring and an odds ratio of 3.11 (95% confidence interval 1.10-8.84) for a high probability of SDB. There was a joint effect between MSG and overweight in relation to SDB.

    CONCLUSION: The intake of MSG may increase the risk of SDB in Chinese adults with a normal body weight.


    Improving Cognitive Function With Ginseng-Fortified Milk?

    July 23, 2012 — American ginseng is reported to have neurocognitive effects, and research has shown benefits in aging, central nervous system disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. The challenges of incorporating ginseng into food are twofold: it has a bitter taste, and food processing can eliminate its healthful benefits. Reporting in the August issue of the Journal of Dairy Science®, a group of scientists has formulated low-lactose functional milk that maintained beneficial levels of American ginseng after processing. An exploratory study found the product was readily accepted by a niche group of consumers.–“Our goal was to develop low-lactose milk that could be consumed by the elderly to improve cognitive function,” reports lead investigator S. Fiszman, PhD, of the Instituto de Agroquimica y Tecnologia de Alimentos (IATA), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC), Patema (Valencia), Spain. “Consumers who were interested in the health benefits of ginseng rated our product quite highly.”—Because older people frequently have trouble digesting milk products, the researchers developed a low-lactose formula. American ginseng was added, and then the milk was sterilized by ultra-high temperature processing (UHT), which prolongs shelf life. Analysis found that sufficient levels of ginseng remained in the milk after treatment to improve cognitive function as reported in the literature.—To reduce the bitter taste of American ginseng, the investigators developed samples with vanilla extract and sucralose, a zero-calorie artificial sweetener. In a preliminary study, 10 tasters with a good ability to discriminate between flavors compared low lactose UHT milk without any additives (the control) to low lactose milk with ginseng extract, vanilla aroma, and sucralose added before UHT treatment[U1] . They developed a list of 10 attributes that described the sample: color, sweet odor, milk flavor, vanilla flavor, metallic/root flavor, sweetness, bitterness, aftertaste, astringency, and viscosity. They then rated the intensity of each attribute for five samples; the control; the control with ginseng extract, vanilla aroma, and sucralose added; the control with ginseng extract added; the control with vanilla and ginseng extract; and the low lactose milk with ginseng extract; vanilla aroma; and sucralose added before UHT treatment.———-In a second study, 100 participants were asked, on a scale of one to five, how willing they would be to consume a “highly digestible semi-skimmed milk,” and a “highly digestible semi-skimmed milk enriched with ginseng extract that would improve cognitive function.” Then, they tasted and rated, on a scale of one to nine, the overall acceptability of the control milk and the low lactose milk with ginseng extract, vanilla aroma, and sucralose added before UHT treatment.—Both the presence of ginseng and the thermal treatment affected some sensory properties of the milk. The addition of ginseng significantly increased the perceived light brown color in the flavored and unflavored samples, and was highest in the reduced-lactose milk with ingredients added before the UHT treatment. The sweet odor was more intense in flavored samples, but decreased slightly in the samples of milk with ingredients added before UHT treatment. Bitterness was clearly perceived in the samples containing ginseng additives, but was lower in flavored samples, indicating that the vanilla aroma and sucralose masked, to some extent, the bitter taste caused by ginseng extract.—Consumer responses varied greatly, depending on interest in the product. 78% indicated that they would be likely to consume the highly digestible milk, and after tasting the product, 87% of them indicated they would buy the sample. 47% indicated they were not interested in milk enriched with ginseng, and after tasting, they gave it a low acceptability rating. However, for the 32% of consumers who did express an interest in the product, 75% declared they would buy it[U2] .—“Drinking 150 to 300 mL of this ginseng-enriched milk would provide the amount indicated to be effective for improving cognitive functions. Combined with the low levels of lactose, this makes the drink an appropriate functional beverage for the elderly,” says Dr. Fiszman. “Among consumers more likely to consume ginseng products, the newly developed milk was well accepted. The addition of more congruent flavors such as chocolate, citrus, or coffee, could be more effective in masking non-milk-related sensory attributes, Other alternatives could be investigated.”—Commenting on the studies, Susan Duncan, PhD, professor, Department of Food Science & Technology, Virginia Tech, noted, “With the combination of intrinsic health benefits in milk and these additional ingredients, milk becomes an easy way to deliver valuable functional ingredients and the functional benefits of milk components. The study, led by Professor Peter Elwood (Cardiff University) together with Professor Ian Givens from the University of Reading’s Food Chain and Health Research Theme, aimed to establish whether the health benefits of drinking milk outweigh any dangers that lie in its consumption.–Importantly, this is the first time that disease risk associated with drinking milk has been looked at in relation to the number of deaths which the diseases are responsible for.–The review brought together published evidence from 324 studies of milk consumption as predictors of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and, diabetes. Data on milk consumption and cancer were based on the recent World Cancer Research Fund report. The outcomes were then compared with current death rates from these diseases.–Professor Givens explained: “While growth and bone health are of great importance to health and function, it is the effects of milk and dairy consumption on chronic disease that are of the greatest relevance to reduced morbidity and survival. Our review made it possible to assess overall whether increased milk consumption provides a survival advantage or not. We believe it does.-“Our findings clearly show that when the numbers of deaths from CHD, stroke and colo-rectal cancer were taken into account, there is strong evidence of an overall reduction in the risk of dying from these chronic diseases due to milk consumption. We certainly found no evidence that drinking milk might increase the risk of developing any condition, with the exception of prostate cancer. Put together, there is convincing overall evidence that milk consumption is associated with an increase in survival in Western communities.”–The reviewers also believe that increased milk consumption is likely to reduce health care costs substantially due to reduced chronic disease and associated morbidity.—“There is an urgent need to understand the mechanisms involved and for focused studies to confirm the epidemiological evidence since this topic has major implications for the agri-food industry,” added Professor Givens.–Story Source-The above story is reprinted from materials provided by University of Reading.


    Nations That Consume a Lot of Milk Also Win a Lot of Nobel Prizes

    Jan. 14, 2013 — Nations that consume a lot of milk and milk products also tend to have a lot of Nobel laureates among their populations, suggest the authors of a letter, published in Practical Neurology.—Research published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine reported a strong association between a nation’s chocolate consumption and Nobel laureate prowess, speculating that the flavonoid content of chocolate was behind the boost in brain power. This got the letter authors thinking. As chocolate is often combined with milk, could it be the amount of milk/milk products consumed per head that fuels Nobel Prize success? They looked at the 2007 data from the Food and Agriculture Organization on per capita milk consumption in 22 countries as well as the information provided by the author of the chocolate theory, and found a significant association.—Sweden has the most Nobel laureates per 10 million of its population (33). Although, it hosts the Nobel committee, which some might argue could introduce an element of bias; it also consumes the most milk per head of the population, getting through 340kg every year.–And Switzerland, which knocks back 300kg of the white stuff every year, has a Nobel haul of similar proportions (32).–At the other end of the scale, China has the lowest number of Nobel laureates in its population.     Eating Eggs When Pregnant Affects Breast Cancer In Offspring

    Dec. 2, 2008 — A stunning discovery based on epigenetics (the inheritance of propensities acquired in the womb) reveals that consuming choline—a nutrient found in eggs and other foods—during pregnancy may significantly affect breast cancer outcomes for a mother’s offspring.–This finding by a team of biologists at Boston University is the first to link choline consumption during pregnancy to breast cancer. It also is the first to identify possible choline-related genetic changes that affect breast cancer survival rates.—“We’ve known for a long time that some agents taken by pregnant women, such as diethylstibesterol, have adverse consequences for their daughters,” said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. “But there’s an upside. The emerging science of epigenetics has yielded a breakthrough. For the first time, we’ve learned that we might be able to prevent breast cancer as early as a mother’s pregnancy.”—The researchers made the discovery in rats by studying females whose mothers were fed varying amounts of choline during pregnancy. Different groups of pregnant rats received diets containing standard amounts of choline, no choline at all, or extra choline. Then the researchers treated the female offspring with a chemical that causes cancer of the mammary gland (breast cancer). Although animals in all groups developed mammary cancer, the daughters of mothers that had received extra choline during pregnancy had slow growing tumors while daughters of mothers that had no choline during pregnancy had fast growing tumors.–“Our study provides additional support for the notion that choline is an important nutrient that has to be considered when dietary guidelines are developed,” said Krzysztof Blusztajn, Ph.D., Professor of Pathology at Boston University and the study’s senior researcher. “We hope it will be possible to develop nutritional guidelines for pregnant women that ensure the good health of their offspring well into old age.”–The researchers also found multiple genetic and molecular changes in the rats’ tumors that correlated with survival outcomes. For example, the slow growing tumors in rats had a genetic pattern similar to those seen in breast cancers of women who are considered to have a good prognosis. The fast growing tumors in mice had a pattern of genetic changes similar to those seen in women with a more aggressive disease. The researchers also found evidence that these genetic changes may result from the way that choline affects modifications of the DNA within the mammary gland of fetuses as they develop in the womb.–The National Cancer Institute estimates that there will be more than 184,000 new cases of breast cancer in 2008 and more than 40,000 deaths.     Choline Supplementation During Pregnancy Presents a New Approach to Schizophrenia Prevention

    Jan. 15, 2013 — Choline, an essential nutrient similar to the B vitamin and found in foods such as liver, muscle meats, fish, nuts and eggs, when given as a dietary supplement in the last two trimesters of pregnancy and in early infancy, is showing a lower rate of physiological schizophrenic risk factors in infants 33 days old. The study breaks new ground both in its potentially therapeutic findings and in its strategy to target markers of schizophrenia long before the illness itself actually appears. Choline is also being studied for potential benefits in liver disease, including chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis, depression, memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and certain types of seizures.–Robert Freedman, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado School of Medicine and one of the study’s authors and Editor of The American Journal of Psychiatry, points out, “Genes associated with schizophrenia are common, so prevention has to be applied to the entire population, and it has to be safe. Basic research indicates that choline supplementation during pregnancy facilitates cognitive functioning in offspring. Our finding that it ameliorates some of the pathophysiology associated with risk for schizophrenia now requires longer-term follow-up to assess whether it decreases risk for the later development of illness as well.”–Normally, the brain responds fully to an initial clicking sound but inhibits its response to a second click that follows immediately. In schizophrenia patients, deficient inhibition is common and is related to poor sensory filtering and familial transmission of schizophrenia risk. Since schizophrenia does not usually appear until adolescence, this trait — measurable in infancy — was chosen to represent the illness.—Half the healthy pregnant women in this study took 3,600 milligrams of phosphatidylcholine each morning and 2,700 milligrams each evening; the other half took placebo. After delivery, their infants received 100 milligrams of phosphatidylcholine per day or placebo.     Secret Human Testing Revealed in Declassified U.S. Army Documents; Lawsuit Follows

    It is always a challenge attempting to describe how sick and power mad are some of the elite who have taken up positions within the military-industrial-scientific complex. Martino-Taylor uncovered a mountain of evidence proving that an aerosol spraying campaign was in fact conducted by the U.S. Army during the 1950s and ’60s. She has revealed documents clearly showing that sprayers were set up in multiple cities on buildings, deployed from station wagons, and attached to planes.—Despite statements at the time which downplayed the spraying as non-toxic, the evidence shows that the Army knew that what was sprayed consisted of radioactive compounds breathed in by hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens.     Aerosoling in the USA in the “50”’s–Martino-Taylor is pressing for an investigation into whether or not the spraying could have led to illnesses, including cancer.

    The abstract of her dissertation reads as follows:–This piece analyzes a covert Manhattan Project spin-off organization referred to here as the Manhattan-Rochester Coalition, and an obscure aerosol study in St. Louis, Missouri, conducted under contract by the U.S. military from 1953–1954, and 1963–1965. The military-sponsored studies targeted a segregated, high-density urban area, where low-income persons of color predominantly resided. Examination of the Manhattan-Rochester Coalition and the St. Louis aerosol studies, reveal their connections to each other, and to a much larger military project that secretly tested humans, both alive and deceased, in an effort to understand the effects of weaponized radiation. Through this case study, the author explores how a large number of participants inside an organization will willingly participate in organizational acts that are harmful to others, and how large numbers of outsiders, who may or may not be victims of organizational activities, are unable to determine illegal or harmful activity by an organization. The author explains how ethical and observational lapses are engineered by the organization through several specific mechanisms, in an effort to disable critical analysis, and prevent both internal and external dissent of harmful organizational actions. Through studying the process of complex organizational deviance, we can develop public policies that protect the public’s right to know, and construct checks and methods to minimize the chance of covert projects that are contrary to societal norms.


    Can Thrive in Your Gums

    Jan. 3, 2013 — A new research report published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology shows how the bacteria known for causing gum disease–Porphyromonas gingivalis–manipulates the body’s immune system to disable normal processes that would otherwise destroy it. Specifically, the report shows that this pathogen prompts the production of the anti-inflammatory molecule Interleukin-10 (IL-10). This, in turn, inhibits the function of T-cells, which would otherwise help to protect the host from this particular microbial infection.–“Since greater than 50 percent of the U.S. population over 50 years-of-age develop adult periodontal disease, we hope that the results of our study will ultimately help in the development of novel treatments that could prevent or ameliorate the chronic infection caused by the pathogen P. gingivalis,'” said Jannet Katz, D.D.S., Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.–To make this discovery, scientists used cells from mice that were exposed to P. gingivalis. One portion of the cells was treated with an inhibiting antibody against IL-10 and the other portion of cells was not treated. All of the cells were then tested for interferon gamma production. An increase of interferon gamma production was seen in the treated cells, but no increase was found in the untreated cells. These findings suggest that the damage done by P. gingivalis happens when the immune cells of the host are first exposed to this pathogen, and further implies that for treatment to be successful, it must be started as early as possible. This study highlights the mechanism by which P. gingivalis can establish a chronic infection in the form of periodontal disease and provides insight into how the disease develops. Results also demonstrate the importance of very early intervention either by eradication of the bacterium with specifically designed therapeutics or by prevention via the development of an effective vaccine.–“Gum diseases and the infections that cause them can be incredibly stubborn and difficult to treat,” said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. “What isn’t as well known is why these infections are so difficult to eradicate. A new diagnostic platform enables the pathogens to be detected quickly, enabling dentists to act swiftly to initiate the right treatment.

    Bleeding gums during tooth brushing or when biting into an apple could be an indication of periodontitis, an inflammatory disease of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. Bacterial plaque attacks the bone, meaning teeth can loosen over time and in the worst case even fall out, as they are left without a solid foundation to hold them in place. Furthermore, periodontitis also acts as a focal point from which disease can spread throughout the entire body: If the bacteria, which can be very aggressive, enter the bloodstream, they can cause further damage elsewhere. Physicians suspect there is a connection between periodontitis pathogens and the sort of cardiovascular damage that can cause heart attacks or strokes. In order to stop the source of inflammation, dentists remove dental calculus and deposits from the surface of teeth, but this is often not enough; particularly aggressive bacteria can only be eliminated with antibiotics.—Of the estimated 700 species of bacteria found in the mouth cavity, there are only eleven that are known to cause periodontal disease in particular; of these, some are deemed to be severely pathogenic. If these biomarkers are present in the gingival sulcus — the small gap around the base of the tooth — then the patient is at high risk of a severe form of periodontitis. But the only way to find out is by conducting a bacteria test. The problem is that current methods for identifying pathogens are time-consuming and must be carried out in an external contract laboratory. Conventional bacterial analysis using microbial culture carries the risk of bacteria being killed as soon as they come into contact with oxygen.

    Bacterial analysis in less than 30 minutes—A new mobile diagnostic platform is designed to speed up identification of the eleven most relevant periodontitis pathogens considerably. Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI in Leipzig have collaborated with two companies, BECIT GmbH and ERT-Optik, to develop a lab-on-a-chip module called ParoChip. In future this will allow dentists and medical labs to prepare samples quickly and then analyze the bacteria. All the steps in the process — the duplication of DNA sequences and their detection — take place directly on the platform, which consists of a disk-shaped microfluidic card that is around six centimeters in diameter. “Until now, analysis took around four to six hours. With ParoChip it takes less than 30 minutes. This means it’s possible to analyze a large number of samples in a short amount of time,” says Dr. Dirk Kuhlmeier, a scientist at the IZI.–The analysis is conducted in a contactless and fully automated manner. Samples are taken using sterile, toothpick-shaped paper points, after which the bacteria are removed from the point and their isolated DNA injected into reaction chambers containing dried reagents. There are eleven such chambers on each card, each featuring the reagent for one of the eleven periodontal pathogens. The total number of bacteria is determined in an additional chamber, via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This method allows millions of copies of even tiny numbers of pathogen DNA sequences to be made. In order to generate the extremely quick changes in temperature that are required for PCR, the disk-shaped plastic chip is attached to a metal heating block with three temperature zones and mechanically turned so it passes over these zones. This causes a fluorescent signal to be generated that is measured by a connected optical measuring device featuring a fluorescence probe, a photo detector and a laser diode. The key benefit is that the signal makes it possible not only to quantify each type of bacterium and thus determine the severity of the inflammation, but also to establish the total number of all the bacteria combined. This enables doctors to fine-tune an antibiotic treatment accordingly.–“As the connected optical measuring system allows us to quantify bacteria, ParoChip is also suited to the identification of other bacterial causes of infection, such as food-borne pathogens or those that lead to sepsis ,” says Kuhlmeier, who goes on to emphasize further advantages of the compact diagnostic platform: “Using ParoChip does away with many of the manual steps that are a necessary part of current bacteria tests.     Jan. 18, 2013 — New review by International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Nutrition Working Group examines role of nutrition in sarcopenia, with focus on protein, vitamins D and B, and acid-based diet.–Sarcopenia, or the gradual loss of muscle mass, is a common consequence of aging, and poses a significant risk factor for disability in older adults. As muscle strength plays an important role in the tendency to fall, sarcopenia leads to an increased risk of fractures and other injuries.  —The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Nutrition Working Group has published a new review which identifies nutritional factors that contribute to loss of muscle mass, or conversely, are beneficial to the maintenance of muscle mass. The Group reviewed evidence from worldwide studies on the role of nutrition in sarcopenia, specifically looking at protein, acid-base balance, vitamin D/calcium, and other minor nutrients like B vitamins.—“The most obvious intervention against sarcopenia is exercise in the form of resistance training,” said Professor Jean-Philippe Bonjour, co-author and Professor of Medicine at the Service of Bone Diseases, University of Geneva. “However, adequate nutritional intake and an optimal dietary acid-base balance are also very important elements of any strategy to preserve muscle mass and strength during aging.”

    The review discusses and identifies the following important nutritional factors that have been shown to be beneficial to the maintenance of muscle mass and the treatment and prevention of sarcopenia:

    Protein: Protein intake plays an integral part in muscle health. The authors propose an intake of 1.0-1.2 g/kg of body weight per day as optimal for skeletal muscle and bone health in elderly people without severely impaired renal function.
    Vitamin D: As many studies indicate a role for vitamin D in the development and preservation of muscle mass and function, adequate vitamin D should be ensured through exposure to sunlight and/or supplementation if required. Vitamin D supplementation in seniors, and especially in institutionalized elderly, is recommended for optimal musculoskeletal health.
    Avoiding dietary acid loads: Excess intake of acid-producing nutrients (meat and cereal grains) in combination with low intake of alkalizing fruits and vegetables may have negative effects on musculoskeletal health. Modifying the diet to include more fruits and vegetables is likely to benefit both bones and muscles.
    Emerging evidence also suggests that vitamin B12 and/or folic acid play a role in improving muscle function and strength.—As well, the Review discusses non-nutritional interventions such as hormones, and calls for more studies to identify the potential of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in the prevention of sarcopenia.

    Dr. Ambrish Mithal, co-author and Chair and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes division at Medanta, New Delhi underlined the need for further research in the field. “Strategies to reduce the numbers of falls and fractures within our aging populations must include measures to prevent sarcopenia.     Jan. 18, 2013 — All humans have enormous numbers of bacteria and other micro-organisms in the lower intestine. In fact our bodies contain about ten times more bacteria than the number of our own cells and these tiny passengers are extremely important for our health. They help us digest our food and provide us with energy and vitamins. These ‘friendly’ commensal bacteria in the intestine help to stop the ‘bad guys’ such as Salmonella that cause infections, taking hold. Even the biochemical reactions that build up and maintain our bodies come from our intestinal bacteria as well as our own cells. -Pretty important that we get along with these little bacterial friends… definitely. But as in all beautiful relationships, things can sometimes turn sour. If the bacteria in the intestine become unbalanced, inflammation and damage can occur at many different locations in the body. The best known of these is the intestine itself: the wrong intestinal bacteria can trigger Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The[U1]  liver also becomes damaged when intestinal bacteria are unbalanced.—Research groups led by Professor Jayne Danska at the Sick Children’s Hospital of the University of Toronto and Professor Andrew Macpherson in the Clinic for Visceral Surgery and Medicine at the Inselspital and the University of Bern have now shown that the influence of the intestinal bacteria extends even deeper inside the body to influence the likelihood of getting diabetes. In children and young people, diabetes is caused by the immune cells of the body damaging the special cells in the pancreas that produce the hormone insulin. By[U2]  chance, 30 years ago, before the development of genetic engineering techniques, Japanese investigators noticed that a strain of NOD laboratory mice tended to get diabetes. These mice (also by chance) have many of the same genes that make some humans susceptible to the disease. With the help of the special facilities of the University of Bern and in Canada, these teams have been able to show that the intestinal bacteria, especially in male mice, can produce biochemicals and hormones that stop diabetes developing.—Diabetes in young people is becoming more and more frequent, and doctors even talk about a diabetes epidemic. This increase in diabetic disease has happened over the last 40 years as our homes and environment have become cleaner and more hygienic.     ‘Friendly’ Bacteria Protect Against Type 1 Diabetes, Researchers Find


    Researchers have found that non-obese diabetic mice deficient in innate immunity were protected from diabetes in normal conditions. However, if they were raised in a germ-free environment, lacking “friendly” gut bacteria, the mice developed severe diabetes. —Sep. 22, 2008 — In a dramatic illustration of the potential for microbes to prevent disease, researchers at Yale University and the University of Chicago showed that mice exposed to common stomach bacteria were protected against the development of Type I diabetes.—The findings, reported in the journal Nature, support the so-called “hygiene hypothesis” – the theory that a lack of exposure to parasites, bacteria and viruses in the developed world may lead to increased risk of diseases like allergies, asthma, and other disorders of the immune system.—-The results also suggest that exposure to some forms of bacteria might actually help prevent onset of Type I diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which the patient’s immune system launches an attack on cells in the pancreas that produce insulin.—The root causes of autoimmune disease have been the subject of intensive investigation by scientists around the world.—In the past decade, it has become evident that the environment plays a role in the development of some overly robust immune system responses. For instance, people in less-developed parts of the world have a low rate of allergy, but when they move to developed countries the rate increases dramatically. Scientists have also noted the same phenomenon in their labs.—Non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice develop the disease at different rates after natural breeding, depending upon the environment where they are kept. Previous research has shown that NOD mice exposed to killed (i.e., non-active) strains of tuberculosis or other disease-causing bacteria are protected against the development of Type I diabetes. This suggests that the rapid “innate” immune response that normally protects us from infections can influence the onset of Type 1 diabetes.—In the Nature paper, teams led by Li Wen at Yale and Alexander V. Chervonsky at the University of Chicago showed that NOD mice deficient in innate immunity were protected from diabetes in normal conditions. However, if they were raised in a germ-free environment, lacking “friendly” gut bacteria, the mice developed severe diabetes. Symptoms of diarrhea are generally exhibited in a week’s time; however, it may also take longer. This condition develops in approximately 10 million people (travelers) every year.

    How to Treat Bacterial Infection

    The remedies given below are effective in dealing with the problem of bacterial infection. Pharmacological therapy for gastroenteritis is generally not needed.

    The antibiotics that are generally used in the treatment this infection include Ciprofloxacin, Ceftriaxone and Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Intake of antibiotic medications coupled with sufficient rest allows fast recovery from these infections.
    It is necessary to avoid the intake of solid diets, at least in first few days of treatment. Thus, diet for patients of gastroenteritis should mostly include liquids.
    To compensate the body fluids lost due to bacterial infection (diarrhea), one should increase the intake of liquids. It is however, necessary to avoid consuming the caffeinated beverages and milk.
    One should make use of only those medications prescribed by the doctor.
    Electrolyte drinks should be given to children to make up for the loss of fluids. Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is used for children to recover from dehydration.
    The use of rice or wheat-based Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) are found to be far more effective than other sugar-based liquids.
    If the level of consciousness of patients decreases, the need to give them intravenous fluids may arise.
    It is necessary to avoid the intake of foods that contain a high amount of sugar. Such foods are responsible for increasing the osmotic load. If the osmotic load increases, diarrhea becomes aggravated.
    The intestinal bacterial infection can be effectively dealt with by making appropriate dietary changes. Medications should be used only under the guidance of an expert. If proper care is not taken, the infection complicates into problems like postinfectious arthritis in which the patient suffers from joint pain. Further spreading of infection is another danger that one needs to be aware of. Taking the necessary precautions like maintaining proper hygiene, using pure water for drinking, etc. should prevent the occurrence of intestinal infection in future.



    Antidepressant Side Effects Reported to the FDA:

    There have been 6,011 birth defects adverse reactions that have been reported to the US FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System (MedWatch), between 2004 and 2011, these break down to:

    3,386 cases of antidepressants causing heart problems
    2,190 cases of antidepressants causing general birth defects
    218 cases of a antidepressants causing lung and heart defect causing normal blood circulation failure
    217 cases of antidepressants causing clubfoot

    METHOD for mixing:

    Eczema in Infants Linked to Gut Bacteria

    Jan. 21, 2013 — Children with eczema have a more diverse set of bacteria in their guts than non affected children, finds a new study in BioMed Central’s open access journal BMC Microbiology. The types of bacteria present were also more typical of adult gut microbes than for toddlers without eczema.—Eczema is a chronic inflammation of the epidermis. The gut bacteria of children with or without eczema was examined when they were six and 18 months old. At six months all the infants had the same types of bacteria but by 18 months old the children with eczema had more of a type of bacteria normally associated with adults (Clostridium clusters IV and XIVa) while the healthy children had a greater amount of Bacteroidetes.—MSc Lotta Nylund from University of Turku, Finland, who led the project explained, “The composition of bacteria in a child’s gut depends on its environment and the food it eats. You would expect that as a child’s diet changes so will the bacteria present.     Caloric Restriction Has a Protective Effect On Chromosomes

    A sustained lowering of food intake over time results in an increase of telomere length — the ends of chromosomes — Jan. 23, 2013 — One of the indicators of a cell’s health is the state of its DNA and containers — the chromosomes — so when these fuse together or suffer anomalies, they can become the source of illnesses like cancer and/or aging processes.–According to a study carried out by a team led by María Blasco, the director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) and head of the Telomeres and Telomerase Group, a sustained lowering of food intake over time results in an increase of telomere length — the ends of chromosomes — in adult mice, which has a protective effect on the DNA and genetic material.—These beneficial effects on the youth of the chromosomes translate to a lower incidence of cancer and other age-related illnesses. The journal PLOS ONE is to publish the details of this study in its online edition this week.

    A lower incidence of cancer and better health—To carry out the study, researchers used young mice — just three months old — and reduced their caloric intake by 40% before observing them until the end of their life cycle.-“We see that mice that undergo caloric restriction show a lower telomere shortening rate than those fed with a normal diet,” says Blasco. “These mice therefore have longer telomeres as adults, as well as lower rates of chromosome anomalies,” she adds.—To study the effects of this phenomenon on the health of the mammals, researchers observed the incidence of age-related illnesses like cancer. The mice that had been fed a lower calorie intake showed a reduction in the incidence of cancer. Furthermore, these mice also showed a lower incidence of other age-related illnesses such as osteoporosis, greater glucose uptake or improvements in motor coordination.—When the researchers carried out these same experiments with a variety of mice that produce more telomerase — a protein that lengthens telomeres and protects chromosomes — they observed that these mice not only enjoyed better health but also lived up to 20% longer.—“We believe that such a significant increase in longevity is due to the protective effect against cancer produced by caloric restriction — incidents fall by 40% if we compare them with the mice that produce more telomerase and have a normal diet — and, added to the presence of longer telomeres, this makes the mice live longer and better,” says Blasco.—Despite the effects of caloric restriction depending on the genetic characteristics of each organism, this study opens the way to studying the effect other factors and lifestyle habits, such as smoking or exercise, might have on aging.—Furthermore, it is calculated that there are currently more than 10,000 people in the world on some form of controlled caloric restriction, so the observation of these individuals will be decisive in discovering the effects of this type of diet on humans.—=Story Source-The above story is reprinted from materials provided by Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncologicas (CNIO), via EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS. —Journal Reference-Elsa Vera, Bruno Bernardes de Jesus, Miguel Foronda, Juana M.
